Everything you need to know about women’s history month
Women’s history month is an annual event that takes place every march, which celebrates the accomplishments/ contribution of women in in history, culture, and society. We commemorate Women’s History Month as a celebration, as well as all the battles women faced to be equal, and be treated as an important role in society. Women’s history month is celebrated in the month of
March by the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia.
Women’s history month was brought to life from a week long celebration that celebrated women, organized by the school district of Sonoma, California in 1978. A few years later people grew fonder of the idea, and it caught on within communities, school districts, and organizations all across the country.
Rosa Parks – Sparked the the civil rights movement
Emmeline Pankhurst – Founded the Women’s social and political union, campaigned for the parliamentary vote for women
Rosalind Franklin – Her help was crucial to the discovery of the double helix shape found in DNA, this was a priceless discovery that helped further the study on genetics.
Amelia Earhart – Amelia was an American aviator who set many flying records, and lead the advancement of women aviation, Amelia took up aviation at the age of 24, and broke the record for altitude, reaching a height of 14,000 feet. In 1932 she became the first woman to fly solo across the atlantic.
Emmeline Pankhurst – Founded the Women’s social and political union, campaigned for the rights of women, mostly pushing for the right to vote in local elections. Emmeline founded the WPSU an organization whose members were the first to christened “suffragettes”. Like many of the other suffragettes, emmeline was arrested multiple times and went on hunger strikes which resulted in violent force feeding.
Ways you can celebrate
Learn about influential women in history. There are a lot of influential women to look up to right now but there are also a lot throughout history. One thing you can do for women’s history month is learn more about the women that inspire you, and learn more about ther impact women had in history.
Look for local events. Many cities now embrace and celebrate women’s history month, try to find and activities around you that you can partake in to show your appreciation.
Volunteer. Volunteering at a local women’s shelter or clinic can be a great way to celebrate women’s history month with others, and it also boosts morality.
