Looking to the Future

Looking to the Future

Aramis Adcock, reporter

Staring at the same walls day after day. Watching the entire netflix catalogue. Watching YouTube videos about things we don’t even remotely care about. This seems to be our new reality. We haven’t seen any of our friends in over a month. We haven’t been able to see movies, or go out for pizza. Quarantine is the proverbial pits. During this stressful time, it is easy to give into despair. It seems like this will never end. But it will. Although the end is far away, it will come. The world will be different, for sure, but it will still be there. The question on my mind is what will it look like? In this article, I want to share some thoughts as to what I think the future could look like.

Well for starters, I don’t think we’ll be so carefree in our attitudes. Before this nightmare began, we were much more free-spirited. Nationally speaking, We were all kind of blissfully ignorant towards certain realities, like the reality that a deadly virus could turn the world upside down. But that is no longer the truth. We will be coming out into a world that is much harsher. The relative prosperity we all lived in will be gone. Many people will be unemployed. Another kind of great recession is inevitable. The only words of comfort that I can offer is that America survived something like this before, and we will do it again. With a new kind of maturity that none of us wanted to learn.

Secondly, I sincerely hope that humanity will learn to be more compassionate. If we are going to rebuild a better world, it will have no room for greed and petty division. The new standard of human decency needs to be to treat others like you want to be treated, and anything less of this needs to be considered unacceptable. The time for selfishness is over.

And lastly, we’ll be more connected with each other. The whole world is going through this, and so everyone understands the difficulties. Hopefully with this collected understanding, people will see that they are not so different from one another. We will become more connected as our ability to empathise will increase. I know this sounds a tad idealistic, but it will become necessary to move forward.

To conclude, the future for mankind is uncertain. Honestly, I have no idea what will come next. But I hope that it will be good, because that’s all I can do for now
