December 1st marks a big kickoff in Woodland Park. It is the day when Christmas truly begins around town. Holiday lights and decorations adorn every street lamp. The Holiday Home Tour and Christmas Parade help people celebrate this joyful time of year. Another big event is held on December 1st, Breakfast with Santa. The true meaning of Christmas, giving back, brings the entire community together on this fun filled morning.
For over 15 years now the Kiwanis Club of Woodland Park has held Breakfast with Santa on the first Saturday of December. This is a chance to bring the community out for a free pancake breakfast, pictures with Santa, free toys and cookies, and there are even llamas to pet! Julie Watson, a member of Kiwanis and the person in charge of the event this year shows delight at the community gathering.
“The club members wanted to do something in the community that would offer a meal to people who need help.” She explains about how it all started.
She has been working it every year and it still makes her smile. “Seeing the kids and seeing all their happy little faces.” She says in regards to what she loves most about working it every year. She goes on to add, “People love to come to Breakfast with Santa.”
Kids flock to stand in line to receive a picture with Santa. They also can’t wait to tell him what they want this year for Christmas.
“My top five choices are Lego Niningo, and I can’t remember the rest.” Jackson Neal pointedly says after getting his picture taken with Santa. When asked about if he was excited that he was able to see Santa his only reply was, “Yeah!”
Everywhere you look there are families either sitting or standing, enjoying pancakes and sausage; the breakfast of champions. Kiwanis members even had to run to Wal-Mart by 9:00 because they were about to run out of chocolate milk. By 9:30, over 500 people had already been served.
There is no doubt that Breakfast with Santa draws a crowd. Hundreds of smiling community members turn out every year to eat, donate and partake. It truly shows that the life of Christmas is alive in our small community. It kicks off the holiday fun and the true spirit of Christmas.
